ปลาหมอเป็นปลาที่สามารถพบได้ในทุกแหล่งน้ำ กระจายอยู่ทั่วไปในทวีปเอเชีย สำหรับในประเทศไทยพบทุกภาค และเป็นปลาที่คนไทยรู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี ด้วยใช้เป็นอาหารมาช้านาน และมีความเชื่อว่าหากปล่อยปลาหมอจะทำให้ไม่เป็นโรคหรือหายจะโรคได้ ด้วยชื่อที่มีความหมายถึงหมอหรือแพทย์ผู้รักษาโรค และนิยมเลี้ยงเป็นปลาเศรษฐกิจในปัจจุบัน อีกทั้งในปลาที่มีสีกลายไปจากสีปกติ เช่น สีทองยังนิยมเลี้ยงเป็นปลาสวยงามที่มีราคาขายแพงอีกด้วย

ปลาหมอมีชื่อเรียกอื่น ๆ เช่น "ปลาหมอไทย", "ปลาเข็ง" หรือ "ปลาสะเด็ด" ในภาษาอีสาน เป็นต้น
